Must-Have Gear for Baby’s First Eight Weeks

The first couple months of a baby’s life are both wonderful and exhausting and filled with A-ha! moments as parents adjust to life with a newborn. Luckily there’s stuff out there to help make things easier. Here’s our list of essential gear for those first eight weeks:

Baby monitor: We highly recommend a video monitor that lets you see as well as hear your sleeping baby as you catch up on things around the house. Just don’t forget to take the occasional nap yourself! Our product page lets you compare features to find the model that’s right for you.

Car seat/stroller combo: It’s so nice to be able to transfer a sleeping baby from car to stroller without taking her out of her car seat. A travel system allows you to do just that.

Baby Bjorn or other infant carrier: It’s a beautiful thing to be able to strap your tiny infant to your chest and hold her close while keeping both hands free.

Breast pump: Mothers who are breastfeeding and home on maternity leave may not think they need one of these, but it’s a great way to get Daddy to handle the 3 a.m. feeding. Think of it as the best gift you can give him, and yourself. Consider a fully-loaded model that runs on a rechargeable battery for optimal convenience.

Bulb syringe nasal aspirator: Newborns have a tough time breathing through their mouths, and those tiny nostrils sure get clogged up easily. Be sure to bring home one of those rubber bulb syringe nasal aspirators from the hospital, if you can—they are the simplest way to suction out the snot. Or better yet, buy a nicer one with a clear tip so you can see how much you’re pulling out with every squeeze/release.

Nail file: It sounds like a small thing, but it’s important to keep those tiny soft whisper-thin fingernails trimmed, else your baby scratch herself (or you) and suddenly have one more reason to fuss. You can buy nail clippers made especially for babies, but they can feel awkward on the newest of fingers, in which case, use a fine emery board instead.
